Peace lilies are popular plants to give, which is why so many gardeners are eager to learn the specifics about their care.
The good news is that these plants are very easy to maintain. Here are a few tips to keep your peace lily happy and healthy.
- Peace lilies are a tropical plant and prefer a warm environment. Don’t the let room temperatures fall below 40o F or the plant may not survive. Daytime temperatures between 68 – 85o F and night temperatures around 58 – 75o F are ideal. Also, be sure and keep your plant out of cold drafts.
- The plant should be placed in a location with bright, filtered light. Direct light may burn the leaves.
- The soil should be moist but never soggy. Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings, but don’t wait until the leaves wilt because this may cause them to turn yellow. It is also advisable that the water be at room temperature to prevent shock to the roots. Its also a good idea, if you have municipal water, to let it set in an open container for a couple of hours to allow the chlorine to evaporate.
- A telltale sign of over fertilizing is brown leaves. This is often a result of the mineral salts in most chemical fertilizers.
- Feed your peace lily – Use Happy Naturals Sea Results per directions on a monthly basis year round.
- Repot your peace lily every 2 – 3 years. Mid-spring is the best time to do this. Use THG Coir Brick, Pour n’ Feed Soil Conditioner and a good garden soil or compost in this ratio: 2CB, 1PnF, 2 Soil or Compost. This will provide a good growing medium and ensure good drainage.
- If the plant is reluctant to flower, try reducing the light to encourage blooms.
- Clean the leaves regularly with a damp cloth to help the plant breathe. Wipe both the upper and lower sides of the leaves to remove dust and pests such as spider mites, mealy bugs and scale.
- Use Happy Naturals Indoor Foliar Feed micronutrient spray monthly for added vigor.

Ideas to help you get more vegetables from a small garden space
• Grow you garden up. Place vining vegetables like cucumbers on a trellis. Grow pole beans rather than bush beans- you’ll get three times the yield from the same space.
• Make use of spot gardens. These are sunny spots where you can plant a few vegetables. Salad greens are ideal for spot gardens.
• Don’t plant too much of one vegetable. Two zucchini plants will produce more than enough.
• Choose tomato and pepper varieties that produce small fruit. The smaller the size of the fruit, the more fruit the plant will produce.
• Interplant fast maturing crops such as lettuce, spinach, and radishes with slower crops such as beans, squash, and melons. By the time the slow crop grows to fill the space, the quick crop will be harvested.
